phttps://www.reddit.com/r/hoggit/comments/v8k4ia/psa_ryzen_5800x3d_is_probably_the_new_cpu_king/

Hey all. Hadn't seen much published info or benchmarks on the 5800X3D in DCS, so I figured I'd do a little PSA since I do in fact have one around.
The 5800X3D is easily the most performant CPU for DCS VR I've ever come across. It completely wipes the floor in traditionally CPU-bound situations in DCS, particularly on the ground with many AI units or other aircraft in the area. So why "probably" the new king, and not definitely? - Because I don't actually have a 12900KS to compare with here and now, but have instead created a baseline between existing 12900KS DCS VR benchmarks and compared them to my balls-to-the-walls 5600X, and created a generalized %-offset to compare against. If those baselines are anywhere near accurate, the 5800X3D also takes the cake with a margin of almost two-digit milliseconds compared to the 12900KS in the CPU-bound scenarios seen in the analysis above.
The 5800X3D features 96MB of L3 cache that's stacked for the first time in consumer processor history. This L3 cache is bonded together using an extremely fast interconnect that makes traditional C4 chip connections look like it's from the 1990's, and microbumps connects look like it went extinct 5 years ago. Vertically stacked, this triples the amount of L3 cache as compared to the 5600X, and slightly more than triples as compared to the 12900KS. So why is that so important for DCS? While I can't empirically point to this as a fact for DCS specifically, AMD's technical marketing director has explained that for simulator titles in particular, CPU calculations like physics or systems simulation hit the L3 cache hard on the hardware-level. And once it flows over (32MB for the 5600X; 30MB for the 12900KS), the chip has to rely on RAM. RAM latency is generally 8-10 times longer than L3 cache latency, and as such, latency can spike if the ongoing scenario begs for more calculations than those 32MB/30MB can hold. In VR, latency is our living bread. By stacking L3 cache and giving it an extremely fast interconnect between the L3 layers, AMD provides a product that keeps 3+ times more physics calculations, AI behavior, etc. in L3, preventing overflow far more often. This results in CPU-bound DCS scenarios where frametimes are anywhere between *halved* and *cut in third.* You can see AMD's technical marketing director talk about the 3D V-cache technology used in the 5800X3D here.
In my video, I tried to record scenarios to test this out, and sure enough: in-air, the latency difference to my beloved 5600X was 10-20%, equiv. 11ms->8ms (nothing to sneeze at), but in the case of Growling Sidewinder server ground spawns with AI and multiplayer units abundant, I repeatedly saw latency go to 25-30ms on my 5600X while *staying* in the 10-11ms range, only periodically hitting 14-15ms, on my 5800X3D.
In conclusion, it's not the girth, but how-- no wait, it totally is about the girth this time. Very impressed with the 5800X3D and how its unique cache provides a much better DCS experience.
